NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -A new generic company to boost Pfizer's sales of the painkiller Celebrex could soon be the first to introduce a new drug to treat a major disorder.
The new drug, called COX-2 selective COX-2 inhibitors (the first of its kind), will compete with the blockbuster arthritis drug Celebrex, Pfizer Inc. said in a statement.
COX-2 inhibitors work by blocking the production of certain chemicals that cause pain. By blocking COX-2, Celebrex helps lower inflammation and fever.
The new drug is the first to block COX-2 inhibitors' effects, which have been a big hit for Pfizer.
Celebrex was introduced in 2002, and it's been the most prescribed drug of all time, accounting for more than half of all prescriptions.
"Pfizer has a significant presence in the world's leading pain treatment markets, including the United States," Pfizer spokesman David Hirsch said in an e-mail. "We're excited to see COX-2 inhibitors being the first in our line of treatment to target a new area of medicine."
But Pfizer has not yet received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration to market COX-2 inhibitors.
Patients can buy the drugs from a pharmacy benefit manager, which can then arrange for them to be sold at a discounted price. Patients should be aware that the drug is available only by prescription, and it can only be sold in the United States if the doctor prescribes it.
